S. Korea, US, Japan Condemn N. Korea’s Satellite Launch, Weapons Shipments to Russia

South Korea, the United States and Japan have condemned North Korea’s launch of a military reconnaissance satellite and its weapons shipments to Russia as violation of UN Security Council resolutions. 

Seoul’s defense ministry said on Friday that the three nations made the statements in the 14th Defense Trilateral Talks(DTT) held virtually on Wednesday. 

The chief delegates of the three nations denounced the North’s recent diversification of nuclear delivery systems, tests and launches of multiple ballistic missiles and the launch of what the North purports to be a military reconnaissance satellite using ballistic missile technology as clear violations of UN Security Council resolutions. They also condemned the North’s illicit ship-to-ship transfers and arms shipments to Russia. 

The three sides then reaffirmed that North Korea’s seventh nuclear test, if conducted, will be met with a strong and resolute response from the international community. 

Noting Russia’s recent veto of a renewal of the mandate of a UN panel monitoring violations of sanctions on North Korea, the three sides affirmed their commitment to strengthening efforts to ensure effective sanctions implementation.

Cambodia’s Rice Export Falls 5.7 Pct in Q1

PHNOM PENH–Cambodia had exported 166,451 tonnes of milled rice in the first quarter of 2024, down 5.7 percent from 176,581 tonnes in the same period last year, said a Cambodia Rice Federation report on Friday.

It made a gross revenue of 123.6 million U.S. dollars from the export of the commodity during the January-March period this year, down 1.9 percent from the 126 million dollars a year earlier, the report said.

Some 46 exporters shipped Cambodia’s milled rice to 56 countries and regions around the world, it added.

According to the report, the Southeast Asian country exported 43,039 tonnes of milled rice to China in the period, earning 28.1 million dollars.

The kingdom’s exported rice and rice products include fragrant rice, white rice, parboiled rice, and organic rice, among others.

Commerce Minister Cham Nimul said that Cambodia has been exploring new markets for its rice, targeting countries that have free trade agreements with the kingdom.

Purple Kiss to release new album

Purple Kiss will release a new EP this month.

Max Changmin to make musical debut

TVXQ’s Max Changmin will make his debut as a musical star.

The casting list for the musical “Benjamin Button” has been unveiled, with  Max Changmin, Kim Jae-beom and Kim Seong-sik alternating in the lead role as Benjamin. It will be Max Changmin’s first time starring in a musical.

Local musical production company EMK unveiled casting for its upcoming new musical “Benjamin Button” on Monday. 

The musical is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and it will open on May 11 at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.

Zerobaseone sets record in Japan for biggest debut release

Zerobaseone has set a record in Japan for the biggest debut release by a non-Japanese act. 

According to Japan’s Oricon charts, the group’s single “Yura Yura” sold over 300,000 copies, becoming the highest-selling single for a non-Japanese act’s debut release. The feat was achieved in just five days since the single was released on March 20 in Japan. 

On the day of its release, the single sold over 180,000 copies, landing at No. 1 on Oricon’s Singles Chart.

2nd Seventeen Forest created in Seoul

Another forest named after popular boy group Seventeen has been created at a park in Seoul.

The Seventeen Forest No. 2 is located in Nanji Han River Park in western Seoul. It was created with money donated by subscribers to a local streaming platform’s eco-friendly project. 

The streaming service says 2% of subscribers’ monthly payment goes towards the project when they sign up for their favorite artist on the project website.

Cambodia’s Bicycle Export Down 43 Pct in Q1

PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s bicycle export fell 43 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2024, said a General Department of Customs and Excise’s report on Tuesday.

The Southeast Asian country exported bicycles, including electric bicycles, worth 96.9 million U.S. dollars during the January-March period this year, a decrease of 43 percent from 170 million dollars over the same period 2023.

Ministry of Commerce’s Secretary of State and spokesperson Penn Sovicheat said the made-in-Cambodia bicycles had been shipped mainly to European countries, the United States, Britain and Canada, among others.

“The drop was due to global economic slowdown and uncertainties that had resulted in a plunge in purchase orders,” he told Xinhua.

Sovicheat said bicycles are one of Cambodia’s major manufacturing products for exports after garments, footwears, and travel goods.

There are currently five bicycle factories in the kingdom, all of them are located in special economic zones in Svay Rieng Province’s Bavet City on the border with Vietnam.
