On the 24th, the Paris Olympics began the men’s soccer group stage ahead of the opening ceremony. Japan secured a resounding 5-0 victory over Paraguay from South America. In Group D, Japan’s midfielder Shunsuke Mito scored the opening goal in the 18th minute of the first half.
In the second half, Mito scored a header in the 63rd minute, making it his second goal. In the 69th minute, midfielder Rihito Yamamoto scored, bringing the score to 3-0.
Forward Shota Fujio scored consecutive goals in the 81st and 87th minutes. Japan started their campaign with a 5-0 victory.
In the 25th minute of the first half, Paraguay’s midfielder Wilder Viera received a red card for fouling Japan’s forward Yu Hirakawa, leaving Paraguay to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match.
Japan will face Mali in their second match on the 27th.
