Dyson has announced its new headphones, the “Dyson OnTrac Headphones.” These will be available in select Dyson stores and retailers starting this summer. The release date and price for Japan have not yet been determined.
Dyson, known for its focus on “quiet operation” in vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, and air purifiers, has developed audio devices utilizing insights on sound and noise gained from research by hundreds of audio engineers over approximately 30 years. In 2022, they introduced the “Dyson Zone,” headphones with air purification functionality, as the first product in the wearable category that can be taken outside the home.
The Dyson OnTrac, the second product in the wearable category, is the company’s first “audio-focused” device. The Dyson Zone was heavier and thicker due to built-in air purifier filters and monitors, but the Dyson OnTrac has removed these components, reducing thickness to less than half and weight by over 30%.
Additionally, the Dyson OnTrac boasts up to 55 hours of battery life by integrating a high-capacity lithium-ion battery into the headband. The headband design, inspired by the shape of a horse saddle to distribute weight, is similar to the Dyson Zone, ensuring that the battery weight does not become a burden.
The audio device project, led by Jake Dyson, son of Dyson’s founder James Dyson, aims to create “a product loved by musicians.” The Dyson OnTrac’s sound range reproduces from 6Hz to 21kHz, exceeding the human audible frequency, and features advanced active noise cancellation (ANC) that reduces surrounding noise by up to 40dB.
The design, developed by Jake and Dyson’s CMF (Color, Material, Finish) team, includes four color options for the body: aluminum, copper, black nickel, and ceramic cinnabar. Eight customizable outer caps and ear cushions are available separately.
Compared to previous Dyson products, the Dyson OnTrac offers a rich color lineup, targeting those who seek both functionality and fashion in their gadgets, as well as fans looking to enjoy “oshi-katsu” (supporting favorite idols). The goal is to establish a new image of Dyson audio devices as synonymous with functionality and design.
