Giant Bokor Buddha expected to be major tourist attraction

A giant Buddha structure on Bokor Mountain is around 30% complete – and is expected to be a major tourist draw when completed.

The giant statue is being built by the Sokha Group and will be 108 metres tall.

The huge shrine, located on the top of Bokor Mountain in Monivong National Park, will be a religious destination for local Buddhists and tourists from all over the world.

The 108-meter-high Buddha statue was inaugurated in January 2023 and will take around four years to build

It will cover over 90 hectares on the ridge of Bokor Mountain

It’s base will be 248 meters long and 186 meters wide and features four large stairs with dragon handrails representing the four major directions in the style of Angkor Wat in the reign of King Suryavarman II in the 12th century.

The purpose of building this huge Buddha statue on Bokor Mountain is to be a shrine for the Cambodian people, as well as to dedicate peace, prosperity and lasting peace to all people.

This huge Buddha statue is also a contribution to support the field of Buddhism and the development of cultural tourism – especially to attract national and international tourists to this area in large numbers and provide a lot of income from those tourists.

S. Korea, UAE Sign Free Trade Deal to Open Up Crude, Automobile Markets Tariff Free

Anchor: South Korea and the United Arab Emirates(UAE) on Wednesday signed a comprehensive economic partnership agreement(CEPA), Seoul’s first such pact with an Arab nation. [Sound bite: Official welcome ceremony before S. Korea-UAE Summit]

A grand welcoming ceremony featuring the Air Force’s Black Eagles aerobatic team and honor guard inspections signaled a wider market opening between South Korea and the United Arab Emirates(UAE).

President Yoon Suk Yeol and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held bilateral talks at the top office in Seoul on Wednesday, launching the first free trade agreement between South Korea and an Arab country.

The UAE is South Korea’s 14th largest trading partner, with an annual bilateral trade volume exceeding 20 billion U.S. dollars.

With the comprehensive economic partnership agreement(CEPA) officially signed, the two sides are scrapping tariffs on more than 90 percent of their trade items over the next ten years, including automobiles and crude oil.

While exporting 483 million dollars worth of cars to the UAE, Seoul last year imported over ten percent of its crude oil purchases from the Arab country.

With the bilateral free trade deal, the UAE is also set to open its online game and music markets to the highest level to South Korea.

On the first day of his state visit to South Korea on Tuesday, Sheikh Mohamed held meetings with leaders of key South Korean businesses, including Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor and SK groups as well as Hybe, the entertainment agency for K-pop superstars BTS.

At the bilateral talks, the UAE’s sovereign wealth fund also reaffirmed its plan to invest 30 billion dollars in South Korea, which was agreed during Yoon’s state visit to Abu Dhabi last year.

The two countries also signed a memorandum of intent for South Korea’s construction of at least six liquefied natural gas carriers worth around one-point-five billion dollars.

Swiatek and Osaka set for intriguing meeting – day four preview

Defending champion Iga Swiatek returns to French Open action on Wednesday but faces a potentially tricky tie against former number one Naomi Osaka in the second round.

The pair, who have both won four Grand Slams, are scheduled to play the third match on Court Phillipe Chatrier.

Current world number one Swiatek is aiming to become the first woman since Justine Henin in 2007 to win three French Open titles in a row.

Osaka, who is now 134th in the world rankings as she continues her return from maternity leave, has never gone beyond the third round in Paris.

Elsewhere, third seed Carlos Alcaraz faces Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong in the second match on Chatrier, while Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner headlines the night session.

Italy’s Sinner, seeded second at this year’s tournament, faces home favourite Richard Gasquet from 19:15 BST.

The first rounds of the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles are set to start on day four after rain disrupted Tuesday’s schedule.

British pairing Katie Boulter and Heather Watson are playing in the fourth match on court 12, while fellow Britons Luke Johnson and Henry Patten are also in action in Wednesday’s men’s draw.

Swiatek and Osaka set for showdown

Poland’s Swiatek began her French Open title defence with a trademark 61-minute dismantling of qualifier Leolia Jeanjean on day two.

The 22-year-old is in formidable form after securing back-to-back titles in Madrid and Rome in the build-up to Roland Garros.

She already has an impressive French Open record, having won 29 of her 31 matches there.

Japan’s Osaka came through 6-1 4-6 7-5 against Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti for her first win in Paris in three years.

Each of Osaka’s major triumphs have come on hard courts – at the US Open in 2018 and 2020, and the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021.

She did, however, reach the last 16 on the Italian Open clay earlier in May.

Ministry, IOM committed to migrant workers’ rights

Minister of Labour and Vocational Training Heng Sour met with Kristin Parco, Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Cambodia, at the Ministry on Monday.

During the meeting, both parties discussed the orientation information provided to migrant workers prior to their departure abroad.

Sour said the Ministry’s strategic plan is to enable migrant workers to receive maximum protection and benefits, which is the goal of the government.

Sour thanked Parco for establishing cooperation and support for the Ministry in the past and to continue to strengthen the management mechanism for migrants to be more effective and beneficial in the future.

Parco reiterated her continued support for the government, in particular on migration management.

Ministry spokesman Katta Orn said yesterday the meeting between the two sides was to study the policy, strategy, and other priority programmes of the Ministry towards strengthening governance and labour migration management, promoting protection, skills development, the successful integration of migrant workers, increasing potential of oversees work, and how the IOM can best support the Ministry in achieving its strategic goals.

“The Ministry continues and expands cooperation with countries that receive Cambodian workers, the private sector, and NGOs to ensure that a legitimate migration is fully supported by the host country to improve the lives of migrant workers, and provide additional support. At the end of their term, the workers can return to Cambodia,” he added.

The Ministry and IOM have been working together to compile orientation information for workers before leaving for work abroad.

In 2010, the Ministry and IOM compiled a pre-departure orientation guide for migrant workers going to Thailand, Malaysia, and Kuwait.

“The Royal Government, through the Ministry, is committed to promoting the rights of migrant workers abroad,” Orn said,

“The Ministry cooperates with development partners to ensure that Cambodian workers are fully aware of their labour and legal rights when abroad as migrant workers,” he added.

A programme officer with the labour rights group Central, De The Hoya, said yesterday that to prevent trafficking, the government should disseminate more information to workers regarding job scams and illegal trafficking, and take action against companies that use fraudulent methods to lure Cambodian workers to foreign countries.

He wants to see effective implementation in the prevention of human trafficking in Cambodia to protect migrant workers, by ensuring their safety and upholding their human rights.

In 2023, the Ministry provided employment opportunities abroad to 1,355,936 people, of whom 552,851 were women.

Around 1,262,175 Cambodian migrant workers are in Thailand, 50,970 in South Korea, 22,262 in Malaysia, 20,056 in Japan, 871 in Singapore and 218 in Hong Kong.

Samsung Electronics union calls first-ever strike

A union representing thousands of workers at Samsung Electronics has called the first strike at the South Korean technology giant since it was founded five and a half decades ago.

The National Samsung Electronics Union says it will hold a one-day protest by asking all of its members to use their paid leave on 7 June and has not ruled out a full-scale strike in the future.

The union says its has about 28,000 members, accounting for more than a fifth of the company’s total workforce.

Samsung Electronics says it will continue to negotiate with the union.

“We can’t stand persecution against labour unions anymore. We are declaring a strike in the face of the company’s neglect of labourers,” a union representative said during a live-streamed news conference.

Samsung Electronics’ management has been in talks with the union since the start of this year over wages, but the two sides have so far failed to strike a deal.

The union has demanded a 6.5% pay rise and a bonus pegged to the company’s earnings.

Samsung Electronics is the world’s largest maker of memory chips, smartphones and televisions.

Analysts have warned that a full-scale strike could affect the firm’s computer chip manufacturing and impact the global supply chains of electronics.

Samsung Electronics is the flagship unit of South Korean conglomerate Samsung Group. It is the biggest of the country’s family-controlled businesses that dominate Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

Samsung Group was known for not allowing unions to represent its workers until 2020 when the company came under intense public scrutiny after its chairman was prosecuted for market manipulation and bribery.

Samsung Electronics’ shares were trading about 2% lower in Seoul after the announcement.
