Phnom Penh authorities confirmed that on the occasion of the first day of the Water Festival, there were about 1,200,000 national and international tourists came to visit Phnom Penh, while the criminal situation did not occur significantly.

It said that in that day, the health officials provided first aid to a total of 1,674 people with health problems among those number there were 243 women while there is one people was sent to hospital.

Global headwinds keep Cambodia’s GFT exports down nearly 17 percent

Cambodia’s main exports of garments, footwear and travel goods (GFT) continued to decline amidst global challenges and in the January to October period, the exports recorded a slide of 16.90 percent, compared to the same period last year, triggering chances of further job losses in the sector.

According to the latest trade data of the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE), Cambodia exported $8.96 billion worth of GFT goods during the first ten months of the year, a sharp decline from the $10.78 billion the country exported during the same period in 2022.

GFT goods, the biggest export earner for the country, helped Cambodia earn $12.63 billion last year, an increase of 15 percent compared to 2021. But this year, the earnings from the sector declined essentially due to the worsening international economic situation and the subsequent drop in demand, especially from the US and the European Union (EU).

The GFT goods exports for October 2023 alone showed a decline of 5.69 percent year on year, going down compared to the previous month’s 4.16 percent decline. In fact, the GFT goods exports declined every month during the year so far except in June when they gained one percent growth relative to June 2022.

The exports in August 2023 declined by 11.12 percent and in July by 28.15 percent compared to the respective months last year. The decline in exports for May 2023 was 17.03 percent compared to May 2022. For April, they showed a decline of 30.42 percent, for March by 14.60 percent, in February by 24.54 percent and by 28 percent in January, compared to the respective months
last year.

The decline in GFT goods exports continued even as almost all other sectors registered growth in exports, the GDCE data showed. Overall, Cambodia’s exports ended up with a marginal rise of 0.2 percent in the January to October period this year, compared to the same period last year.

Within the GFT sector, knitted apparel articles brought in $4.54 billion till October this year, a decline of 17.6 percent, compared to $5.51 billion earned for the same period in 2022. Non-knitted apparel articles earned $1.92 billion, compared to $2.23 billion for the same period last year, again a decline of 13.7 percent year-on-year.

Travel goods netted $1.40 billion until October this year, compared to $1.58 billion for the same period last year, registering a decline of 11.8 percent year-on-year. Footwear exports earned $1.08 billion for the first 10 months this year, also showing a decline of 24.6 percent compared to the same period in the previous year when they earned $1.44 billion.

Siem Reap Airport to attract more international tourists to Cambodia’s famed Angkor

Souvenir vendor Ly Ratana is optimistic that the Chinese-invested Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) will bring more tourists to Siem Reap province, home to the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park, so his business will grow again.

Ratana, who has sold a variety of souvenirs at the Old Market in the eponymous Siem Reap town for more than a decade, said his business was severely hurt during the COVID-19 pandemic and even now, tourist numbers to the province are still far low compared to the pre-pandemic era.

“The opening of this new airport is the expectation of Siem Reap residents, who depend on the tourism sector,” he told Xinhua on Thursday.

Invested by the Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia), an affiliate of China’s Yunnan Investment Holdings Ltd., the 700-hectare airport, designed in traditional Cambodian architecture style, was inaugurated by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Thursday.

Situated in Sotr Nikum district, about 40 km from the Angkor park and more than 50 km from Siem Reap town, the 4E-level international airport will be able to handle 7 million air passengers per annum from 2024 and up to 12 million passengers annually from 2040.

With a 3,600-meter runway, the SAI is currently Cambodia’s biggest airport and is the main gateway to Angkor park, one of the Southeast Asian country’s most popular tourist attractions.

Ratana believes that the new airport has a strong potential to attract more tourists.

“This new airport is much bigger than the old one, so probably there will be more direct flights that will bring more tourists,” he said.

A football player representing the US team at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Indonesia went viral on Cambodia’s social media following the revelation that he is half Cambodian.

Micah Aiden Burton, 17, is an attacking midfielder who became famous on Cambodian internet after participating in the US’s 3-1 victory over South Korea in Jakarta International Stadium’s first group stage qualifier on Sunday.

He entered the pitch in the last ten minutes of the game, but he was unable to score any goals.

Micah was born in Minnesota, USA, to a Cambodian mother. He is now a player with Austin FC II in the MLS Next Pro, the US professional football league’s third division.

Even though he isn’t currently representing Cambodia, supporters of the country’s football expressed their excitement at seeing a player with Cambodian ancestry participate in an international match. Fans do, however, hope that he will eventually play for the Kingdom.

“At last, I have seen a player of Cambodian ancestry playing in an international football tournament at the youth level. He is a hope for Cambodia,” Sabone Venta, the head coach of Kirivong Soksenchey, a club that competes in the Cambodian Premier League (CPL) posted on Facebook.

The Cambodian flag was recently uploaded to Micah’s Instagram, much to the delight of the country’s football supporters.

The U17 national teams of the FIFA member nations compete in the international men’s youth football tournament known as the FIFA U17 World Cup, which is held every two years. This tournament’s 19th edition is being held in Indonesia from November 10 to December 2.

Travelex, a market leading foreign exchange brand, has partnered with the National Bank of Cambodia to start trading Cambodia’s national currency, the Khmer Riel, at Singapore’s Changi Airport, Travel said a statement early this week.

The move is a result of an effort of the National Bank of Cambodia to promote the use of the Cambodian currency. It is also a sign of the growing international recognition of the Cambodian Riel.

“Khmer Riel is now available at Travelex counters at Changi Airport T2 and T3,” commented Ms. CheaSerey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia.

The acceptance of the Riel at Changi Airport is expected to make it easier for travellers to and from Cambodia to exchange their currency. It will also help to promote the use of the Riel among tourists and investors.

Heth Rady, a 38-year-old tuk-tuk driver in Siem Reap, was delighted to see the commencement of SAI operation, saying that it would bring more tourists and investors to the Southeast Asian country.
