Set within a Floridian elementary school, we’re introduced to the aging lizard Leonardo (Sandler) and the lackadaisical turtle Squirtle (Burr), who cohabit a fish tank as classroom pets. Over the years, the duo has observed generations of students. But now, Leo yearns for an adventure outside the confines of his tank.
Upon discovering he has just one year left to live, Leo embarks on an escape. His ensuing adventures outside could be best described as his personal and quite bizarre “bucket list.” The trailer showcases moments like Leo being whirled around by a household vacuum, enjoying a pedicure, and even rampaging through building blocks akin to Godzilla.
However, “Leo” isn’t all fun and games. Leo finds himself entangled in the challenges faced by the students, including contending with a particularly wicked substitute teacher.
Drawing parallels to Sandler’s critically acclaimed Netflix film “Don’t Ever Call It Batsoup,” “Leo” too is a family affair. Alongside Sandler, the film stars his wife and their two daughters. Sunny plays the character of Summer, Sadie is cast as Jaida, and Jackie, Sandler’s wife, portrays Jaida’s mother.
The movie is helmed by Robert Smigel, Robert Marianetti, and David Wachtenheim, with Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison, handling the production. “Leo” was part of Netflix’s release schedule announced in January for 2023. Amid a plethora of releases, it seems the time is ripe for this vibrant coming-of-age tale. “Leo” premieres on Netflix on November 21, 2023.
