On July 6, the “Pokémon × Craft Exhibition: Great Discoveries of Beauty and Techniques” opened at the MOA Museum of Art in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture. The event saw great success with long lines of visitors waiting since early morning, and Pikachu, dressed in a traditional “Koji Tsunagi” patterned kimono, made a special appearance to celebrate.
This craft exhibition, previously held from March to June last year at the National Crafts Museum in Ishikawa Prefecture and praised for its “authentic collaboration between traditional crafts and Pokémon,” has arrived in Shizuoka with an increased number of works.
In addition to the approximately 80 pieces created by 20 artists, ranging from Living National Treasures to young creators, using various techniques and styles such as metalwork, lacquerware, dyeing and weaving, and ceramics, the MOA Museum of Art features new works by two participating artists .
During the opening session, MOA Museum Director Atsukure Uchida stated, “Pokémon are alive. The key is how to express these living Pokémon, and the artists have been very earnest in their efforts to create these works. Moreover, the architectural design of our exhibition rooms was done by Hiroshi Sugimoto, which is truly contemporary art. The presence of Pokémon in this modern art space has made this Pokémon × Craft Exhibition uniquely characteristic of the MOA Museum of Art.”
