In a post-match interview, Xiaohai was moved to tears, sharing, “My nickname, Xiaohai, means ‘little kid,’ and I’ve been gaming since I was six. Now at 35, many say I’m too old to win more, but today, I proved myself.”
Notably, Xiaohai faced challenges early in the tournament, falling to Japanese expert “Ken” Ryuchiki in the top 16 and dropping to the losers’ bracket. Facing elimination, he was behind 2:4 against “Ghost King” Hikaru in the quarterfinals but mounted a comeback to win 5:4 and advance to the semifinals. Xiaohai continued his remarkable run, defeating Gachikun and Kawano with scores of 5:3 and 5:2, respectively, achieving a stunning series of victories from the top 16 to the championship.
