Giant Bokor Buddha expected to be major tourist attraction

A giant Buddha structure on Bokor Mountain is around 30% complete – and is expected to be a major tourist draw when completed.

The giant statue is being built by the Sokha Group and will be 108 metres tall.

The huge shrine, located on the top of Bokor Mountain in Monivong National Park, will be a religious destination for local Buddhists and tourists from all over the world.

The 108-meter-high Buddha statue was inaugurated in January 2023 and will take around four years to build

It will cover over 90 hectares on the ridge of Bokor Mountain

It’s base will be 248 meters long and 186 meters wide and features four large stairs with dragon handrails representing the four major directions in the style of Angkor Wat in the reign of King Suryavarman II in the 12th century.

The purpose of building this huge Buddha statue on Bokor Mountain is to be a shrine for the Cambodian people, as well as to dedicate peace, prosperity and lasting peace to all people.

This huge Buddha statue is also a contribution to support the field of Buddhism and the development of cultural tourism – especially to attract national and international tourists to this area in large numbers and provide a lot of income from those tourists.

Ministry, IOM committed to migrant workers’ rights

Minister of Labour and Vocational Training Heng Sour met with Kristin Parco, Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Cambodia, at the Ministry on Monday.

During the meeting, both parties discussed the orientation information provided to migrant workers prior to their departure abroad.

Sour said the Ministry’s strategic plan is to enable migrant workers to receive maximum protection and benefits, which is the goal of the government.

Sour thanked Parco for establishing cooperation and support for the Ministry in the past and to continue to strengthen the management mechanism for migrants to be more effective and beneficial in the future.

Parco reiterated her continued support for the government, in particular on migration management.

Ministry spokesman Katta Orn said yesterday the meeting between the two sides was to study the policy, strategy, and other priority programmes of the Ministry towards strengthening governance and labour migration management, promoting protection, skills development, the successful integration of migrant workers, increasing potential of oversees work, and how the IOM can best support the Ministry in achieving its strategic goals.

“The Ministry continues and expands cooperation with countries that receive Cambodian workers, the private sector, and NGOs to ensure that a legitimate migration is fully supported by the host country to improve the lives of migrant workers, and provide additional support. At the end of their term, the workers can return to Cambodia,” he added.

The Ministry and IOM have been working together to compile orientation information for workers before leaving for work abroad.

In 2010, the Ministry and IOM compiled a pre-departure orientation guide for migrant workers going to Thailand, Malaysia, and Kuwait.

“The Royal Government, through the Ministry, is committed to promoting the rights of migrant workers abroad,” Orn said,

“The Ministry cooperates with development partners to ensure that Cambodian workers are fully aware of their labour and legal rights when abroad as migrant workers,” he added.

A programme officer with the labour rights group Central, De The Hoya, said yesterday that to prevent trafficking, the government should disseminate more information to workers regarding job scams and illegal trafficking, and take action against companies that use fraudulent methods to lure Cambodian workers to foreign countries.

He wants to see effective implementation in the prevention of human trafficking in Cambodia to protect migrant workers, by ensuring their safety and upholding their human rights.

In 2023, the Ministry provided employment opportunities abroad to 1,355,936 people, of whom 552,851 were women.

Around 1,262,175 Cambodian migrant workers are in Thailand, 50,970 in South Korea, 22,262 in Malaysia, 20,056 in Japan, 871 in Singapore and 218 in Hong Kong.

Samsung Electronics union calls first-ever strike

A union representing thousands of workers at Samsung Electronics has called the first strike at the South Korean technology giant since it was founded five and a half decades ago.

The National Samsung Electronics Union says it will hold a one-day protest by asking all of its members to use their paid leave on 7 June and has not ruled out a full-scale strike in the future.

The union says its has about 28,000 members, accounting for more than a fifth of the company's total workforce.

Samsung Electronics says it will continue to negotiate with the union.

“We can’t stand persecution against labour unions anymore. We are declaring a strike in the face of the company’s neglect of labourers,” a union representative said during a live-streamed news conference.

Samsung Electronics' management has been in talks with the union since the start of this year over wages, but the two sides have so far failed to strike a deal.

The union has demanded a 6.5% pay rise and a bonus pegged to the company's earnings.

Samsung Electronics is the world's largest maker of memory chips, smartphones and televisions.

Analysts have warned that a full-scale strike could affect the firm's computer chip manufacturing and impact the global supply chains of electronics.

Samsung Electronics is the flagship unit of South Korean conglomerate Samsung Group. It is the biggest of the country's family-controlled businesses that dominate Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

Samsung Group was known for not allowing unions to represent its workers until 2020 when the company came under intense public scrutiny after its chairman was prosecuted for market manipulation and bribery.

Samsung Electronics' shares were trading about 2% lower in Seoul after the announcement.

PM calls on parents to strengthen moral education for children in the age of digital technology to maintain dignity in society

The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Dr. Hun Manet, called on families and communities to strengthen moral education for future generations in order to maintain the dignity of society in the era of technological globalisation.

In a message celebrating Family Day under the theme “Families are a strong foundation for social and economic development,” held on May 15, Prime Minister Hun Manet said that the family is an important cell for building high-quality human resources and well-being, which is a strong asset to maintain peace and increase economic value, raise cultural values, and create new ideas towards achieving the long-term sustainable goals of socio-economic development.

At the same time, grandparents, fathers, mothers, and brothers and sisters all play an important role in raising and educating children to be good children, good students, and good citizens for the community and society. The Prime Minister said that education from this family has actively contributed to the preservation and promotion of culture, religion, traditions, and customs of the nation by adhering to morals, ethics, understanding, tolerance, and respect for the law.

Dr. Hun Manet also called on each family and community to continue to strengthen the spirit of good solidarity and pay attention to education, morals, traditions, and customs by providing education, learning, morality, ethics, behaviour, general knowledge, and other professional skills.

The Prime Minister also asked the monks, elders, and teachers to provide good advice to family members and communities for the younger generation to learn and follow; as the saying goes, “the elderly are the training ground for the younger generation.”

Cambodia bags $2.35 billion from agriculture exports

Cambodia exported $2.35 billion worth of agricultural products in the first four months of this year, said a report from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Some 5.3 million tonnes of agricultural products have been exported during the period, a year-on-year increase of 74 percent, read the report.

The main products Cambodia exported included rice, bananas, mangoes, cassava, cashew nuts, corn, palm oil, pepper and tobacco.

Exports of milled rice and paddy rice earned $210 million and $364 million respectively and other agricultural product exports were valued at $1.78 billion, read the report.

“Exports of agricultural products in the first four months of 2024 increased by 2.2 million tonnes compared to the same period in 2023, in which agricultural products contributed to high export growth, including fresh cassava, rice, cassava flour, corn, longan, fresh mangoes and peppers,” the ministry said.

China, EU and ASEAN nations Vietnam and Thailand are the major importers of Cambodia’s agricultural items.

Agriculture Minister Tith Dina encouraged farmers to create modern farming communities to reap more profit.

“Modern agricultural cooperative is a method capable of guaranteeing the supply of raw materials, processed goods and secured markets,” Dina said at a field visit to an agricultural cooperative in Battambang province on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, three ministries – the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology and the Ministry of Rural Development announced plans to join hands to support Cambodian farmers and improve the livelihood of people living in rural areas.

A new joint working group will be formed that will work on water supply and deal with water shortages impacting farmers and the development of irrigation systems in the areas lacking water supply.

Agriculture is one of the four pillars supporting Cambodia’s economy.

The Cambodian government has announced the implementation of a new strategic policy for agricultural development, aiming to upgrade agriculture from household farming to commercial farming and enhance farmers’ income through value-added products.

Under the priority policy, the government deployed 250 agricultural officials and the number will be raised to over 1,300 by 2025 in communes nationwide to add human resources for the agricultural sector’s development.

Ministry launches measures to combat ‘negative mindset’

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport has introduced measures to prevent negative mindsets from developing among students in public schools, after receiving complaints from parents regarding the difficulty they have to cover the cost of additional private tuition for both primary and secondary education.

The Ministry on Tuesday issued a statement, saying that private study activities have created a negative mindset among some students who feel burdened with more exams and lessons for the semester.

Other students, who cannot afford the cost of extra tuition, feel there is an inequality gap.

The Ministry previously issued guidelines aimed at improving student achievements and changing school culture by introducing model school standards across the country. Model schools aim to boost study time by at least two hours per day and with guidelines for evaluating student achievements to ensure consistent educational standards.

The Ministry has also institued a number of measures to implement these guidelines to prevent creating a negative mindset in public schools. Teachers must adhere to professional ethics and follow the guidelines to ensure an equitable study environment.

In addition, public educational institutions must prepare and implement standardised tests for all types of exams, as well as improve the quality of teaching.

The Ministry added, “Public educational institutions must not force students to take extra classes if lessons conflict with school curriculum and exams.”

All public schools must develop and implement part-time programmes to increase self-study time by at least two additional hours. Parents are asked to encourage their children to do self-study at home, it said.

Ministry spokeswoman Khuon Vichheka said that in the case of educational institutions and teachers which do not follow or act contrary to the Ministry’s instructions, then the Ministry will abide by the law and impose fines and penalties.

“Whenever irregularities are found, the Ministry will look at the severity of the problem and comply with the law,” she said.

A parent of a child attending Banteay Srei Primary School in Siem Reap said on an anonymous basis that he is not averse to students from secondary schools studying more, however he was against younger children being compelled to take additional classes.

For students from kindergarten to fifth grade, the Ministry should not allow extra-curricular teaching.

The parent thinks that kindergarten children spend too much time learning for their age.

He noted that the learning of young children should be divided evenly between teachers in school and parents at home.

“Parents send their children to school to learn, but some teachers are using them as a stepping stone to earn extra money,” he said.

Dr Quach Mengly, an education expert expressed disapproval of exploitive teaching methods because they are unethical. He feels the teaching profession may cause injustice for some children because of the gap between rich and poor families.

All educational institutions should adopt teaching methods in the classroom to improve the quality of education for students fairly, he said.

VIDEO: PM Hun Sen recommends schools to halt classes if it is too hot

Prime Minister Hun Manet advised the Ministry of Education to reduce class hours whenever the temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius.

I have given my recommendation to the Ministry of Education.

I saw that the Ministry has also issued a guideline, particularly for schools with young children.

Any day when the temperature goes over 40 degrees Celsius, I would like you to monitor, first and foremost, the class hours.

It is extremely hot, especially at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

You have to change the hours so that the class won’t be held at these hours.

Regarding water for drinking, if it is too hot, the school management has to stop the class right away.

I noticed yesterday that in some classrooms, students have to place wet towels on their heads.
