The iconic Japanese manga “Fist of the North Star” marked its 40th anniversary on September 13th. To commemorate this significant milestone, three major projects have been announced: a new animated series, a nationwide art exhibition featuring new works by manga artist Tetsuo Hara, and the release of newly designed 18-volume comics.
“Fist of the North Star,” serialized from 1983 to 1988 in “Weekly Shōnen Jump,” is a creation by Buronson (writer) and Tetsuo Hara (illustrator). The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world after a nuclear war, focusing on Kenshiro, the successor of the martial art of Hokuto Shinken, as he bears the weight of love and sorrow, growing into a savior.
The new animated series, titled “Fist of the North Star – FIST OF THE NORTH STAR,” plans to faithfully adapt the original’s appeal with the latest animation technology, along with a new staff and cast. Furthermore, original creators Buronson and Tetsuo Hara are also expected to contribute comments. Details regarding the broadcasting and streaming platforms will be awaited in future announcements.
In addition, the largest-ever “Fist of the North Star 40th Anniversary Grand Art Exhibition: Reclaim the Love!!” is set to open on October 7th at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo. The exhibition will showcase 136 episodes, totaling around 3,000 pages, along with 400 selected color works from the time of serialization. From March 2024, the exhibition is also planned to tour Nagoya, Kobe, and Fukuoka.
Moreover, the newly designed first and second volumes of the comic were released simultaneously on September 13th. The first volume features a recommendation comment from Akira Toriyama, and the second volume includes a comment from Hirohiko Araki.
