A significant earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien in eastern Taiwan, causing extensive damage. As of the night of April 4, official reports confirmed 10 fatalities and 1,099 injuries. Communication with 15 individuals remains lost, raising fears of escalating damage.
In Hualien, a strong tremor with a magnitude of over 6 was recorded, leaving 705 people stranded in hotels and tunnels along the Taroko Gorge. Since the main quake, the region has experienced over 390 aftershocks, particularly around Hualien, heightening concerns about potential secondary disasters such as landslides and falling rocks, especially with rainfall expected over the weekend.
Rescue operations involve around 8,200 personnel from the Taiwanese military, police, and fire departments. The fire department has rescued several individuals trapped in a cement material quarry using helicopters. Drone footage from the fire department revealed people waiting for rescue inside a tunnel in the Taroko Gorge, though the rugged terrain complicates rescue efforts.
According to reports from the United Daily News and others, more than 20 individuals were rescued from a collapsed building in Hualien after over eight hours of search and rescue efforts. However, a tragic incident occurred shortly after the quake when a woman in her 30s re-entered the building to save her cat and was killed by aftershocks, trapped between the collapsed first and second floors.
Taiwan’s Premier Chen Chien-jen visited the disaster response center in Hualien to assess the damage and also visited hospitals where the injured are being treated, continuing to oversee the response efforts.
