The novel “Ganbatte Ikimasshoi,” which won the grand prize at the Botchan Literary Award in 1995, is the basis for this anime film adaptation. Set in the lush Matsuyama City in Ehime Prefecture, the story vividly depicts the growth and emotional fluctuations of high school girls dedicated to their rowing club. Previously adapted into a live-action film starring Rena Tanaka in 1998 and a drama with Anne Suzuki and Ryo Nishikido in 2005, the tale now transitions to animation.
In the anime movie, the protagonist Etsuko Murakami, who has resigned herself to not being special and given up on being passionate about anything, is voiced by Sora Amamiya. Alongside her, Miku Itō, Rie Takahashi, Akari Kitō, and Ikumi Hasegawa voice the club members who revive the disbanded rowing team and devote their youth to rowing.
The film is directed and scripted by Yuhei Sakuragi, who was nominated at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival for “Even If the World Ends Tomorrow.” Keiichiro Ochi, known for “The Quintessential Quintuplets,” is on the screenplay, and Asako Nishida from “Love Live!” handles character design. Comments have also been shared by the cast, director Sakuragi, and the original author, Ryoko Shikimura.
