The award ceremony for Italy’s industrial design prize “Compasso d’Oro” was held in Milan on June 20, where Rei Kawakubo, designer for “COMME DES GARCONS,” and architect Tadao Ando from Japan received the Special Contribution Award.
The “Compasso d’Oro,” one of the world’s most prestigious design awards, was established in 1954 by Italian architect and furniture designer Gio Ponti. It is often referred to as the “Academy Awards of the design world.” The organizers of the “Compasso d’Oro” praised Kawakubo’s achievements, stating that she has transformed design far beyond the realm of fashion. “She has posed unique questions to Western clothing culture in particular. In an industry traditionally tied to style, she has contributed to the interpretation of the essence of design.” From around 1983 to 1993, Kawakubo designed chairs, tables, and partitions using metal and wood for use in her boutiques. In 2017, artist Didier Courbot showcased 15 pieces of furniture designed by Kawakubo at galleries in Paris and Belgium.
