Celtics incinerate Heat to clinch series

LOS ANGELES, United States – The Boston Celtics crushed the Miami Heat 118-84 to complete an emphatic 4-1 series victory Wednesday and book their place in the second round of the NBA playoffs.

The postseason top seeds – upset by Miami in last year’s Eastern Conference finals – avenged that loss in spectacular fashion with a one-sided wire-to-wire rout at the TD Garden.

Jaylen Brown and Derrick White scored 25 points apiece to lead Boston, who barely noticed the absence of the injured Kristaps Porzingis.

The Celtics threw down the gauntlet in the first quarter, racking up a whopping 41 points to open up a commanding 18-point advantage.

They extended that lead to 22 points by half-time, and kept up the pressure in the third quarter to lead 98-66 heading into the final frame.

Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla could afford to rest his frontline players for the fourth with the game effectively won against an injury-hit Miami team missing Jimmy Butler and Jaime Jaquez Jr.

Mazzulla said meanwhile the Celtics had not been thinking about last year’s series loss to Miami in this season’s playoff showdown.

Boston will now face either the fourth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers or fifth seeds Orlando in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. Cleveland lead that series 3-2.

Ministry of Education updates economic textbooks to reflect modern Cambodia

Hang Punreay / Khmer Times

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport is actively updating its economic textbooks to better reflect the present state of Cambodia’s economy and the latest governmental policies.

The initiative was highlighted yesterday during a working meeting focused on the revision and compilation of economic literature, chaired by Minister of Education Hang Chuon Naron and attended by relevant officials at the Ministry’s office.

Naron said that in order to accelerate the process of updating the materials, the designated working group must conduct a comprehensive and detailed analysis of Cambodia’s current societal state, paying close attention to various sectors, including emerging industries, new governmental policies, and the country’s progression over the past two decades since achieving peace.

He added the group also aims to study and highlight the positive changes that have taken place in Cambodia with regards to its digital economy and industry.

Nhek Nary, an economics student at the National University of Management, noted the importance of documenting historical and current economic developments for researchers and students.

She noted that in developed nations, governments often support the creation of such academic materials, fostering a broader base of writers and editors for future scholars and a push for competition.

“If the Royal Government or relevant ministries organise a working group to have experts prepare, compile and write books related to the [country’s] social situation, both past and present, it would be a great thing and I support such an idea,” she said.

Nary added that while some students have attempted to document the current social and economic conditions in the country, the lack of support and funding from pertinent ministries has led to many abandoning their projects due to unaffordable publication costs.

Naron has authored a prolific range of books since 2005, covering diverse topics from Cambodia’s economic policies and macroeconomic management to public finance, international law, and educational reforms, reflecting his deep involvement in shaping and documenting the Kingdom’s development and educational standards.

Musk Disbands Tesla EV Charging Team, Leaving Customers in the Dark

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla and owner of X, formerly known as Twitter, gestures as he attends the Viva Technology conference on innovation and startups at the Porte de Versailles exhibition centre in Paris, France, June 16, 2023.

14:00 JST, May 1, 2024

April 30 (Reuters) – Elon Musk has dismissed two Tesla TSLA.O senior executives and plans to lay off hundreds more employees, frustrated by falling sales and the pace of job cuts so far, The Information reported on Tuesday, citing the CEO’s email to senior managers.

Rebecca Tinucci, senior director of the electric vehicle maker’s Supercharger business, and Daniel Ho, head of the new vehicles program, will leave on Tuesday morning, the report said.

Musk also plans to dismiss everyone working for Tinucci and Ho, including the roughly 500 employees who work in the Supercharger group, The Information said. It was not clear how many employees worked for Ho.

Tesla’s public policy team, which was led by former executive Rohan Patel, will also be dissolved, the report said.

“Hopefully these actions are making it clear that we need to be absolutely hard core about headcount and cost reduction,” Musk wrote in the email, the report said. “While some on exec staff are taking this seriously, most are not yet doing so.”

Tesla, which had 140,473 employees globally as of end-2023, did not immediately respond to a Reuters’ request for comment.

Ho joined Tesla in 2013 and was a program manager in the development of the Model S, the 3, and the Y before being put in charge of all new vehicles, while Tinucci joined in 2018 as a senior product manager, according to their LinkedIn profiles.

Two other senior leaders — Patel and battery development chief Drew Baglino — announced their departures earlier this month, when Tesla also ordered the layoffs of more than 10% of its workforce.

Tesla is grappling with falling sales and an intensifying price war, which led to its quarterly revenue falling for the first time since 2020, the company reported last week.

Musk made progress towards rolling out Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance package in China, the epicenter of the EV price war, during a surprise visit to Beijing on Sunday.

That trip came just over a week after he scrapped a planned trip to India, where Tesla has long sought to start operations, due to “very heavy Tesla obligations.”

To ease the pain

Ganghwado강화도 Island is located at the point where the water from the Hangang River meets the West Sea. Capitalizing on such optimal geographical location, Ganghwado Island provided bases for merchants who traveled to and from Seoul on boats. Made to carry goods, cargo boats had a flat bottom, allowing the boats to easily navigate even shallow waters. Cargo boats also helped transport fishing boats’ catches to seaside villages. So, the boats loaded firewood, salt, and fermented shrimp sauce to sell in Hanyang, the old Seoul, and came back with items not available on the island.

The Hangang River is a huge body of water with an average width of one kilometer. So, imagine how difficult it must have been to row the boat up the river carrying a full load. At such times, boat crew would sing songs to cheer them up and give some rhythm to their work. The first song for this week’s episode is such a song, “Rowing Song” sung by Kim Yong-woo. Some lines from the song goes, “Some people are fated to live in wealth and prosperity, but woe is me, why was I born with the fate to make a living out of sailing?” Working on a boat must have been hard, but perhaps such songs provided some comfort to the diligent boatmen.

Next song in the lineup is titled “Dondollari돈돌라리,” a folksong that originated in Hamgyeong-do Province. It is said that on spring days, women collecting mountain herbs near the Namdaecheon남대천 River used to dance to this song. During Japanese occupation, they used to sing this song to calm their nerves after hiding independence activists chased by Japanese soldiers.

The term “Dondollari” refers to things or events that keep turning. Nothing in the world remains the same. Even when Korea under ruthless Japanese rule, Koreans believed that they would get their country back and live freely, and this song was the expression of their hope for change. Today’s version of “Dondollari” is a piece arranged to suit modern sentiments of today’s Koreans. “I have regrets for some days, but I tend to forget the past, because a new day will dawn, my love,” goes some of the lyrics. Hope abounds wherever there is faith that tomorrow will be better than today. Here’s Lee Han-cheol singing “Dondollari.”

The last song we have for this week’s episode is danga “Sacheolga사철가” or “Song of the Four Seasons.” Its lyrics tell us that although the seasons turn every year and are repeated without fail, we should enjoy everything our lives have to offer and not waste our time since we live only once. This moderate tempo song has a melancholy vibe as the passing of time is associated with aging and death. Here are some of its lyrics.

Heartless time passes fleetingly. Even a young person, once grown old, cannot return to youth again. Let’s say a person lives to be eighty years old, but take out the days spent in sickness, in sleep, or worrying, his years don’t even amount to forty.

It is not known when exactly the song was composed, but it is estimated to be in the early part of the twentieth century. The song is presumed to have been written rather recently judging from the fact that the song doesn’t refer to ancient Chinese poems or history like in other danga songs. Instead, the song sings about the futility of life or natural sceneries in simple, easy-to-understand Korean words. Let’s wrap up today’s episode with Park Ae-ri singing “Song of the Four Seasons.”
