Volleyball player Ai Takahashi to join Suntory as attacker for Japan’s men’s national team

Japan men’s national volleyball team attacker Ai Takahashi (22) has decided to join Suntory, the club announced on the 20th. Suntory is a strong team that is the 2023-24 season V-League champion and placed third in the World Club Championships. A press conference will be held on the 28th.

Cambodia calls for ASEAN, int’l cooperation on cybercrime

Cambodia, through the Ministry of Interior, has called for enhanced cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states and the international community to share information to combat cybercrime more effectively.

General Por Pheak, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Interior, said yesterday, “Cambodia wants good cooperation with ASEAN countries and (others) in the world to exchange information and ensure confidentiality in cybercrime proceedings.”

“We want to see state parties who have high-level skills and technology in the fight against cybercrime share those skills or provide training for (members) that are developing their technological capabilities to meet current needs,” he said.

Gen Pheak made the call during the Global Roundtable on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Security Capacity-Building at United Nations Headquarters in New York, US on Friday.

He said the meeting allowed representatives of each participating country to share their experiences in fighting cybercrime.

Cambodia has shared security strategies and skills in the fight against online threats, which the government is paying close attention to in order to ensure security, order, stability, and cybersecurity in society, he added.

Gen Pheak noted that as the digital landscape evolves, it is increasingly important and urgent that capacity-building efforts are accelerated to ensure that all states can safely and securely seize the benefits of digital technologies.

It is also vital that the international community come together to encourage and assist one another by sharing success stories and integrating lessons learned into future development programmes, he added.

Meanwhile, Josephine Teo, Minister for Communications and Information of Singapore, who attended the meeting on Friday, said that the world is more reliant on digital technologies and cyberspace than ever before.

In the face of fast-evolving digital threats, it is timely that the international community gathered to discuss the important issue of cyber capacity building, she said.

Teo added that it should take a multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder approach, as cybersecurity is a cross-cutting domain.

Diverse expertise across the policy, legal, and diplomatic domains is also required to understand and manage cybersecurity at the national level, she added.

Teo said these efforts are key to strengthening the collective resilience in cyberspace to secure the digital way of life for a sustainable future.

It is time for Cambodians ‘to show tennis some love’

Tennis Cambodia is once again inviting all Cambodians to come out and show their support, saying that now is the time for tennis to flourish in the Kingdom.

The 2024 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group IV Playoff Event runs July 8 to 13.

To mark this historic milestone event, the Cambodia Tennis Federation, Tennis Cambodia, is inviting everyone to watch the playoffs at the Morodok Techo National Stadium. No tickets are required – all events at the tournament venue are free and open to the public.

Tep Rithivit is currently attending an Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) board meeting in his capacity as ATF Vice-President and Tennis Cambodia’s Secretary-General in Kazakhstan from Monday through tomorrow this week.

He told Khmer Times that during the first day of the ATF meeting, all fourteen board members of the ATF congratulated Cambodia on its selection as host of the Davis Cup playoffs this year.

He said that the federation applauded Cambodia for its success hosting tennis competitions at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia last May, and added they believe Cambodia has what it takes to host a big international tournament like the Davis Cup.

“That’s something all Cambodians should be proud of, as Cambodia is a small country capable of great accomplishments,” Rithivit said.

He said Tennis Cambodia will strive to make the nation proud, dedicating all its energy to hosting the greatest possible edition of the Davis Cup playoffs. He added that the success of the tournament will make all Cambodians proud, not just himself, the players and the federation.

“What we need now is the backing of our people. We would like to ask that everyone come and cheer on our players throughout the Davis Cup playoffs at the stadium. Please express your support, we are counting on you. Now is the time for tennis to shine in Cambodia and raise Cambodia’s profile on the international scene,” he said.

He noted that, in addition to spectacular Davis Cup tennis competitions, the federation is organising many other entertaining activities, like lucky draws for the spectators.

“So, let’s show some love to tennis and support Cambodian athletes so they can do even better on the court. That’s all we ask for. Together for our country,” Rithivit said.

The 2024 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group IV playoffs feature eight countries: Cambodia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The group event is divided into two pools with four teams each. The top team in each pool plays off against the nation finishing second in the other pool. The nations finishing in third place in each pool play a relegation match against the nation finishing fourth in the other pool.

Research team to unearth a head of Deva statue in the excavation pit at Angkor Thom’s Victory Gate

The excavation team of APSARA National Authority, led by archaeologist On Sopheap, recently unearthed a head of a Deva statue at Angkor Thom’s Victory Gate.

The team had been conducting archaeological excavations at the Victory Gate for over two weeks to assess the structure of the foundation of the balustrades in preparation for a restoration project.

During the excavation, the team discovered a well-preserved head of a Deva statue buried in the foundation pit. Experts determined that the head belonged to the 23rd Deva from the front row and is made of sandstone, measuring 20 cm long, 11 cm wide, and 12 cm high.

Further excavation revealed that the foundations of the balustrades at the Victory Gate are still strong, as they had been repaired during the post-Angkor and French periods. However, stakeholders have suggested additional digging to assess the overall condition of the bridge and the previous repairs before planning future restoration work on the balustrade statues.

The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Dr. Hun Manet, called on families and communities to strengthen moral education for future generations in order to maintain the dignity of society in the era of technological globalisation.

In a message celebrating Family Day under the theme “Families are a strong foundation for social and economic development,” held on May 15, Prime Minister Hun Manet said that the family is an important cell for building high-quality human resources and well-being, which is a strong asset to maintain peace and increase economic value, raise cultural values, and create new ideas towards achieving the long-term sustainable goals of socio-economic development.

At the same time, grandparents, fathers, mothers, and brothers and sisters all play an important role in raising and educating children to be good children, good students, and good citizens for the community and society. The Prime Minister said that education from this family has actively contributed to the preservation and promotion of culture, religion, traditions, and customs of the nation by adhering to morals, ethics, understanding, tolerance, and respect for the law.

Dr. Hun Manet also called on each family and community to continue to strengthen the spirit of good solidarity and pay attention to education, morals, traditions, and customs by providing education, learning, morality, ethics, behaviour, general knowledge, and other professional skills.

The Prime Minister also asked the monks, elders, and teachers to provide good advice to family members and communities for the younger generation to learn and follow; as the saying goes, “the elderly are the training ground for the younger generation.”
